The original television program “The Mickey Mouse Club” premiered in 1955.
The ABC variety show first aired on October 3, 1955, and was hosted by Jimmie Dodd. Its young performers were called Mouseketeers, and the program combined songs, dances, comedy, serials, and segments built around Disney films and characters.
The show grew out of the Mickey Mouse Club idea that had appeared in theatrical children’s events during the 1930s. Walt Disney developed the television version as part of the expansion of Disney entertainment into television during the 1950s.
It is important not to confuse this series with “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” which premiered decades later in 2006. The 1955 program was a live-action variety show, not an animated preschool series.
