In what year did the London Underground’s Jubilee line open to passengers?

The story behind the answer

The London Underground’s Jubilee line opened to passengers in 1979.

The line began service on 1 May 1979 between Stanmore and Charing Cross. It was created by extending and renaming the former Stanmore branch of the Bakerloo line. The new name marked the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, which took place in 1977.

The original Jubilee line was shorter than today’s route. A major extension eastward opened in stages in the 1990s, taking the line from Green Park and Westminster through Canary Wharf and Stratford to its current eastern terminus at Stratford.

The line is coloured silver-grey on the Tube map. Its history can therefore be divided into two major phases: the 1979 opening to central London and the later east London extension. The 1979 date refers to the first passenger service under the Jubilee name.
