The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum opened in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1997.
The museum was established to preserve, study, and present O’Keeffe’s art and life. Its collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other materials connected with the artist, whose long relationship with New Mexico shaped much of her mature work.
O’Keeffe died in Santa Fe in 1986, but the museum did not open until more than a decade later. That gap sometimes causes the museum’s founding date to be confused with the artist’s death date.
The institution also operates the Georgia O’Keeffe Research Center and manages the artist’s historic Abiquiu home and studio for public interpretation. The Santa Fe museum should not be confused with a temporary exhibition or with the Whitney Museum of American Art, which hosted a major O’Keeffe retrospective in 1970.
