Russia adopted the current melody of its national anthem in 2000.
The melody was composed by Alexander Alexandrov for the anthem of the Soviet Union, first performed in 1944. After the Soviet Union dissolved, Russia used “The Patriotic Song” by Mikhail Glinka as its anthem from 1990 until 2000, without official lyrics for most of that period.
President Vladimir Putin supported restoring Alexandrov’s familiar melody, while new words were written by Sergei Mikhalkov, who had also contributed to earlier Soviet versions. The Federal Constitutional Law on the National Anthem was signed in December 2000.
The 2000 decision is sometimes described as a complete return to the Soviet anthem, but the lyrics were revised and the legal state was the Russian Federation, not the Soviet Union.
