In what year did Rocket League become free-to-play?

The story behind the answer

In what year did Rocket League become free-to-play? Rocket League became free-to-play in 2020.

Psyonix made the transition on September 23, 2020, more than five years after the game’s original July 2015 release. Before then, Rocket League was sold as a premium game, although some console players received access through subscription promotions. The free-to-play change made the core game available without an upfront purchase across its supported platforms.

The transition coincided with a major business and account-system update. Rocket League introduced cross-platform progression, allowing linked players to carry eligible cosmetic progress between platforms, and it added new challenges, tournaments, and seasonal systems. The Windows version also moved from Steam to the Epic Games Store, while existing Steam owners retained access and continued receiving updates.

A common mix-up is confusing the announcement period with the actual launch date. Epic Games acquired Psyonix in 2019, but that acquisition did not itself make Rocket League free. The free-to-play model arrived the following year, in 2020, and the game surpassed one million concurrent players shortly afterward.
