In what year did Raymond Weeks organize Birmingham’s first all-veterans celebration?

The story behind the answer

Raymond Weeks organized Birmingham’s first all-veterans celebration in 1947.

Weeks was a World War I veteran who believed the existing Armistice Day observance should recognize veterans of every American conflict. He brought that idea to Birmingham, Alabama, where the city hosted a major celebration in 1947.

The event came soon after World War II, when millions of additional Americans had served in uniform. That timing helped create momentum for expanding the holiday beyond its original World War I emphasis.

The federal government did not adopt the name Veterans Day until 1954. Consequently, the 1947 celebration is best understood as an influential precursor to the modern holiday, not as the date when the federal name was formally established. Weeks’ work later received national recognition from President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
