Orangetheory Fitness opened its first studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2010.
Ellen Latham, Jerome Kern, and David Long founded Orangetheory Fitness. The first studio opened in Fort Lauderdale in 2010, introducing a group-workout format that combined treadmill training, rowing, strength exercises, and heart-rate monitoring.
The brand’s name refers to its “Orange Zone,” a target intensity level intended to produce an afterburn effect in the workout’s training model. Members typically wear heart-rate monitors so performance data can be displayed during class.
The franchise expanded rapidly after its first studio, but the original 2010 opening remains the key founding milestone. It should not be confused with the dates when Orangetheory entered particular countries or reached later studio totals.
