In what year did Nepal adopt “Sayaun Thunga Phulka” as its national anthem?

The story behind the answer

Nepal adopted “Sayaun Thunga Phulka” as its national anthem in 2007.

The anthem replaced “Shreeman Gambhir Nepali,” which had served during the monarchy. Nepal’s interim legislature approved the new anthem on 3 August 2007, during the country’s transition from a kingdom toward a federal democratic republic.

The lyrics were written by poet Pradeep Kumar Rai, better known as Byakul Maila, and the music was composed by Amber Gurung. Its title translates roughly as “Made of Hundreds of Flowers,” reflecting Nepal’s diversity and national unity.

A common mix-up is the anthem’s relationship to the abolition of the monarchy. Nepal formally became a republic in 2008, but the new national anthem had already been adopted in 2007. The anthem is also notable for its inclusive wording, which emphasizes the country’s varied ethnic, linguistic, and geographic communities rather than the former royal institution.
