MTV launched the animated series Daria in 1997.
Daria premiered on March 3, 1997, after the character had first appeared on MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head. The series follows Daria Morgendorffer, an intelligent and dryly observant teenager, as she navigates school, family life, friendships, and the social pressures of suburban adolescence.
The show was created by Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn. Tracy Grandstaff provided Daria’s voice, helping define the character’s deliberately restrained delivery and sharp comic perspective. Although the series grew out of Beavis and Butt-Head, it developed its own setting, supporting cast, tone, and storylines.
A common mistake is to date Daria from her earlier appearances in Beavis and Butt-Head. Those appearances came before the spin-off, but Daria as a standalone MTV series began in 1997. The original run lasted five seasons and concluded with a television film in 2002.
