Membership gave Monaco a full seat and vote in the General Assembly, strengthening its ability to participate directly in international diplomacy. Before joining, the principality already maintained distinct institutions and foreign relations, although its small size and close ties with France shaped its diplomatic development.

Monaco is one of Europe’s microstates, alongside countries such as Andorra, Liechtenstein, and San Marino. Those other European microstates also joined the UN in the late 20th century, which can make their admission dates easy to confuse. Monaco’s date is 1993, not 1945, the year the UN was founded.
