In what year did Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market officially open to the public?

The story behind the answer

Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market officially opened to the public in 1878.

The market began trading on 20 March 1878 on the site of Melbourne’s former Eastern Market. It became a major wholesale and retail center for food, clothing, household goods, and other merchandise. Its location near the city center helped connect producers, traders, and urban shoppers.

The market is often called “Vic Market” by Melburnians. It is not the same institution as the earlier Eastern Market, which operated nearby before closing in 1877. Queen Victoria Market also expanded over time, absorbing parts of the former cemetery and developing permanent sheds.

Today, it is one of Melbourne’s best-known public markets and an important venue for independent traders. Its history illustrates how permanent markets can support small retailers while preserving direct links between local commerce, food distribution, and city life.
