McDonald’s launched its first McCafé in 1993.
The first McCafé opened in Melbourne, Australia. It introduced a coffeehouse-style concept within the McDonald’s system, giving the company a distinct sub-brand for espresso drinks and café beverages while retaining the parent company’s restaurant infrastructure.
McCafé helped McDonald’s compete in markets where café culture and specialty coffee were important parts of everyday dining. Its visual identity commonly used café-oriented design elements, but the McCafé name remained connected to the larger McDonald’s brand through signage, packaging, and restaurant placement.
The concept later expanded internationally and became a significant part of McDonald’s beverage branding. The date is sometimes confused with the period when McCafé entered the United States or other markets; those rollouts occurred later. The original McCafé belongs to Melbourne’s 1993 launch.
