McDonald’s introduced the Happy Meal in 1979.
The children’s meal packaged a small portion of food with a toy, creating a dedicated family-oriented product rather than simply offering children an informal version of an adult meal. Its box and toy became important parts of McDonald’s branding, extending the company’s identity beyond the restaurant sign and menu boards.
The idea developed from regional children’s meal promotions before becoming a nationwide McDonald’s product. The original concept was associated with Bob Bernstein, an advertising executive who worked on the package and presentation. The Happy Meal helped make collectible character partnerships and film tie-ins central to the chain’s marketing.
A frequent confusion is the introduction date of later regional versions and special-edition toys. Those promotions came after the original product launch. The 1979 date refers to the Happy Meal’s introduction as a McDonald’s offering in the United States.
