McDonald’s introduced the Happy Meal nationally in the United States in 1979.
The meal combined a child-sized portion of food with a toy, turning packaging and collecting into an important part of McDonald’s family branding. The concept had been tested in selected markets before its national rollout. Its name and colorful presentation made it distinct from the ordinary menu.
The Happy Meal is often confused with McDonald’s earlier children’s promotions, including character-based advertising and restaurant play areas. The defining feature was the bundled children’s meal, especially the toy included with it.
Toy partnerships later connected the Happy Meal with major films, television programs, and other entertainment brands. This made the product one of the chain’s most recognizable branded offerings, separate from individual menu items such as the Big Mac or Chicken McNuggets.
