McDonald’s introduced the Hamburglar as part of its McDonaldland character group in 1971.
The Hamburglar was a small, mischievous character whose comic identity centered on trying to steal hamburgers. He became one of the best-known figures in McDonald’s character-based advertising, joining Ronald McDonald and other residents of the fictional McDonaldland setting.
The character’s appearance changed over time. Early versions were portrayed as more sinister and adult-looking, while later redesigns made the Hamburglar shorter, younger, and more child-friendly. His striped clothing, cape, and hamburger-themed name made the character easy to recognize in commercials, packaging, and promotional material.
The Hamburglar is often confused with Grimace because both belonged to the same McDonaldland cast. Grimace was associated with shakes and was introduced earlier, in 1971 as well, while the Hamburglar’s defining behavior was hamburger stealing. McDonaldland gave McDonald’s a shared fictional setting that connected individual mascots to the wider brand.
