McDonald's introduced Ronald McDonald as its principal mascot in 1963.
The character was created to appeal especially to children and families, expanding the brand beyond its earlier emphasis on speed and efficient service. Ronald's bright costume, red hair, and clown identity made him visually distinctive in television advertising and restaurant appearances.
Television personality Willard Scott played Ronald in McDonald's first television commercial featuring the character. Scott had already performed a clown character named Bozo, which helped shape the early advertising presentation.
Ronald did not replace every earlier symbol instantly. Speedee remained part of the company's history, while the Golden Arches continued to serve as the central corporate logo. Ronald instead became the most prominent personality in McDonald's family marketing for decades.
