In what year did McDonald’s introduce its Speedee Service System, the fast-service model behind its modern brand?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s introduced its Speedee Service System in 1948, creating the fast-service model behind its modern brand.

Dick and Mac McDonald redesigned their San Bernardino restaurant after deciding that the drive-in’s broad barbecue menu and carhop service were inefficient. The revised operation concentrated on a small number of products, especially hamburgers, fries, and milkshakes.

The system used standardized preparation, an assembly-line layout, and counter service rather than relying on carhops. Those choices made orders quicker and more consistent, ideas that later became central to McDonald’s worldwide identity.

The term Speedee also connected the operating system with an early McDonald’s mascot. The 1948 redesign therefore mattered both operationally and visually: it gave the company a distinctive service promise before the Golden Arches and Ronald McDonald became its best-known symbols.
