McDonald’s began using the “I’m lovin’ it” branding campaign in 2003.
The campaign launched internationally in September 2003 and introduced the lowercase “i’m lovin’ it” phrase as a global McDonald’s identity. It was supported by television advertising, print materials, restaurant signage, and a short musical hook that became closely associated with the company.
The campaign was notable because McDonald’s used one central brand message across many countries while adapting advertisements to local languages and markets. The wording was intentionally conversational and focused on an emotional reaction to the restaurant experience rather than a specific menu item.
People sometimes confuse the campaign’s launch with the release of Justin Timberlake’s related recording. Timberlake appeared in promotional material and recorded a song connected with the campaign, but the corporate branding campaign itself began in 2003. “I’m lovin’ it” followed earlier McDonald’s slogans such as “You Deserve a Break Today” and “You, You’re the One.”
