Marvel Comics first published Spider-Man in 1962, in Amazing Fantasy #15.
The issue was released with a cover date of August 1962 and featured Peter Parker, a teenager bitten by a radioactive spider. Writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko created the character, whose first full story appeared in the final issue of the Amazing Fantasy title.
Spider-Man was unusual among major superheroes because he was a teenager with everyday problems, including schoolwork, money troubles, and family responsibilities. The character proved so popular that Marvel launched The Amazing Spider-Man in 1963, with Spider-Man receiving his own ongoing series.
A common mix-up is confusing Spider-Man's debut with the launch of The Amazing Spider-Man. The character first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15; his self-titled series began the following year. The issue is also notable because Amazing Fantasy was canceled after it was published, making the debut issue especially significant in comic-book history.
