Mark Few became Gonzaga’s head men’s basketball coach in 1999, before his 2026 Hall of Fame induction.
Few succeeded Dan Monson, who left Gonzaga after guiding the Bulldogs to the 1999 NCAA tournament. Few had already been part of the program’s coaching staff and took over as Gonzaga moved from a respected mid-major program toward national prominence.
Under Few, Gonzaga developed into one of college basketball’s most consistent programs. The Bulldogs regularly reached the NCAA tournament and made repeated deep runs, including national championship-game appearances.
The year 1999 is sometimes confused with 1995, when Gonzaga first appeared in the NCAA tournament, or with 2001, when Few led the Bulldogs to their first Final Four. Those are important milestones, but neither is the year he became head coach.
