LinkedIn reached 1 billion members in 2023.
The milestone was announced in November 2023, when LinkedIn said its global membership had passed the one-billion mark. That figure represented registered members of the professional network worldwide, not necessarily one billion people actively using the site every day. Membership counts and monthly active-user counts are different measures, a distinction that often causes confusion in social-media statistics.
LinkedIn began in 2003 as a professional networking service founded by Reid Hoffman and colleagues. Growth accelerated as the site expanded beyond online résumés into recruiting, job listings, company pages, professional publishing, learning, and creator tools. Microsoft acquired LinkedIn in 2016, when the network had roughly 433 million members.
The billion-member milestone also reflected LinkedIn’s international reach. Although it is associated with employment and business networking, the platform had become a broad global database of professional identities, skills, employers, and career opportunities. The milestone was announced alongside new artificial-intelligence features for the site.
