His official debut came on October 29, 2003, against the Sacramento Kings. James scored 25 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, handed out 9 assists, and recorded 4 steals, although Cleveland lost the game. Those numbers immediately signaled that the 18-year-old could contribute across the entire stat sheet rather than relying only on scoring.
James entered the NBA directly from St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. He did not play college basketball, making his transition to the league unusually prominent and heavily scrutinized. Cleveland had chosen him with the No. 1 pick after he became one of the most celebrated high-school players in American basketball history.
He went on to win Rookie of the Year for the 2003–04 season, averaging 20.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. His debut year began a professional career spanning Cleveland, Miami, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
