Gucci opened its first store outside Italy in 1953, choosing New York City for its first international boutique.
The store opened in November 1953 at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street, shortly before the death of founder Guccio Gucci. It marked a major shift from a successful Florentine leather-goods company toward a global luxury brand. The expansion was driven by Guccio’s sons, especially Aldo Gucci, who helped develop the company’s international business.
New York became central to Gucci’s American growth. A second New York shop opened at the St. Regis Hotel in 1960, followed by further expansion in cities such as Chicago, Palm Beach, and Beverly Hills. The Rodeo Drive store, opened in 1968, helped connect Gucci with Hollywood celebrities and broadened its fashion profile.
A common mix-up is 1951, when Gucci opened a store in Milan. Milan was an important Italian location, but it was not outside Italy. The first foreign Gucci store was the New York boutique opened in 1953.
