In what year did Gregor Mendel die?

The story behind the answer

Gregor Mendel died in 1884. He died on 6 January 1884, aged 61, in Brno, then part of Austria-Hungary, after suffering from chronic nephritis.

Mendel was born Johann Mendel in 1822 and later became an Augustinian friar, taking the name Gregor. His best-known experiments with garden peas were conducted decades before his death, mainly between 1856 and 1863. He presented his findings in 1865 and published them in 1866.

Mendel did not receive broad scientific recognition during his lifetime. His work was largely overlooked until around 1900, when researchers rediscovered his conclusions and recognized their importance to heredity and genetics. That later recognition made him one of the central figures in modern biology.

A common mix-up is confusing Mendel's death year with the year his landmark paper was published: the paper appeared in 1866, while Mendel died 18 years later. His funeral also had a notable musical connection: the composer Leoš Janáček played the organ.
