Great Britain defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588.
The Spanish Armada was a large fleet sent by King Philip II of Spain to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. Spain intended to gain control of the English Channel, meet an invasion army from the Spanish Netherlands, and transport it across to England.
The English fleet used faster ships, long-range guns, and repeated attacks to disrupt the Armada’s formation. The decisive turning point came when English fireships were sent toward the Spanish fleet anchored off Calais, forcing it to scatter. The Spanish then sailed north around Scotland and Ireland, where storms and difficult navigation caused further losses.
The defeat did not destroy Spain’s status as a major power, and England did not immediately become dominant at sea. It did, however, strengthen Elizabethan England’s confidence and became a lasting symbol of England resisting a powerful invasion attempt. The event is often called the defeat of the Spanish Armada rather than a single conventional battle.
