In what year did Google acquire YouTube?

The story behind the answer

In what year did Google acquire YouTube? Google acquired YouTube in 2006.

YouTube was founded in February 2005 by former PayPal employees Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. The video-sharing site grew rapidly because it made uploading and embedding online video much easier for ordinary users.

Google announced the acquisition on October 9, 2006, in an all-stock deal valued at about $1.65 billion. YouTube continued operating as a distinct brand and service rather than being absorbed into Google Video, which was Google's competing video product at the time. The transaction was completed in November 2006.

A common mix-up is confusing the acquisition year with YouTube's founding year, 2005, or with the launch of its first video, “Me at the Zoo,” uploaded in April 2005. Google also agreed to preserve YouTube's community-focused identity while providing greater infrastructure and commercial support.
