Georgia O'Keeffe married photographer Alfred Stieglitz in 1924. Their marriage joined two major figures in American modernism, although each maintained a distinct artistic identity.
Stieglitz had promoted O'Keeffe's work since exhibiting her abstract drawings in 1916. He ran influential New York galleries, including the gallery known as 291 and later An American Place. His support helped O'Keeffe reach audiences interested in modern European and American art.
The couple married on December 24, 1924. They spent time in New York and at Lake George, where O'Keeffe painted natural subjects such as flowers, leaves, trees, and hills. Stieglitz also made a celebrated series of photographs of O'Keeffe over several decades.
Their marriage lasted until Stieglitz died in 1946. O'Keeffe then increasingly centered her life in New Mexico, eventually becoming strongly identified with the landscapes around Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch. The marriage date is sometimes confused with the year of their first meeting, but their relationship began years before the wedding.
