O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on March 6, 1986. She had spent much of her later life in New Mexico, where the desert landscape, architecture, and plants remained important subjects in her art.

Her long career had begun decades earlier with abstract charcoal drawings and developed through paintings of flowers, New York skyscrapers, animal bones, and southwestern landscapes. She continued working into old age, although failing eyesight eventually limited her ability to paint.

O'Keeffe's ashes were scattered over Cerro Pedernal, a New Mexico mountain she painted repeatedly. Her death came more than half a century after her marriage to photographer Alfred Stieglitz and several decades after his death in 1946.
