In what year did Georgia O’Keeffe buy her adobe house in Abiquiu, New Mexico?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O’Keeffe bought her adobe house in Abiquiu, New Mexico, in 1945.

The house had originally been part of a larger hacienda and was in poor condition when O’Keeffe acquired it. She spent years having it restored and adapted into a home and studio. The property included the famous black door set in a thick adobe wall, a feature she photographed and painted repeatedly.

Abiquiu offered O’Keeffe privacy and direct access to the landscapes that had attracted her to New Mexico. After Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, she increasingly divided her life between New Mexico and New York before eventually making Abiquiu her main base.

The Abiquiu property is often confused with Ghost Ranch, where O’Keeffe also spent substantial time. Ghost Ranch was a source of landscape subjects; the Abiquiu house was her owned residence and working studio. The National Trust for Historic Preservation now manages the site.
