Georgia O'Keeffe bought her Abiquiu house in 1945.
The house was a neglected adobe property in Abiquiu, New Mexico, and O'Keeffe spent years arranging for its purchase. She had first encountered the site in the 1930s and was especially attracted to a courtyard wall and a door that later became recurring subjects in her paintings.
After acquiring the property in 1945, O'Keeffe worked with architect and contractor Juan Hamilton to restore and adapt it. The house eventually became her principal New Mexico residence and studio, while Ghost Ranch remained another important home and source of imagery.
The Abiquiu house is now preserved as a historic site associated with the artist. It is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch because both places appear throughout her New Mexico work, but they are separate properties in the same broad region.
