Georgia O'Keeffe acquired her house in Abiquiu, New Mexico, in 1945. The property included a historic adobe compound whose courtyard wall and door later became important elements in her paintings.
O'Keeffe had been visiting New Mexico since 1929 and had already bought a house at Ghost Ranch in 1940. The Abiquiu property offered a different setting: it was within a village and had a distinctive adobe architecture that she could reshape into a practical home and studio.
She spent years renovating the neglected building before moving into it. The courtyard entrance, especially the door set in an adobe wall, became a recurring subject in her work. Her attention to that architectural feature demonstrates how O'Keeffe often transformed a specific local form into an abstract, carefully composed image.
The home is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio. It is distinct from the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe and from her separate Ghost Ranch house. The acquisition date is 1945; completion of renovations and full-time use came later.
