In what year did Don Garlits first exceed 200 mph in a dragster?

The story behind the answer

Don Garlits first exceeded 200 mph in a dragster in 1964.

The milestone made Garlits, known as “Big Daddy,” the first drag racer officially credited with surpassing 200 mph in the quarter mile. He achieved it during the era of front-engine “slingshot” dragsters, before his later rear-engine designs transformed driver protection and vehicle layout.

Accounts distinguish between an initial 200-mph pass and an officially recognized, backed-up record. Garlits reportedly recorded a 200.44-mph run at Detroit Dragway in July 1964, but his 201.34-mph pass at Island Dragway in New Jersey on August 2, 1964, is widely cited as the first official backed-up 200-mph run. The distinction mattered because drag-racing records required confirmation under competition rules.

The achievement came as nitromethane-powered Top Fuel cars were rapidly advancing. Garlits had already been the first to break the 170- and 180-mph barriers, and he later became a pioneer of rear-engine dragsters after a 1970 crash badly injured his foot. Thus, 1964 marks both a speed breakthrough and a key chapter in the sport’s technological history.
