Congress established the United States Semiquincentennial Commission in 2016 to coordinate planning for America250.
The commission was created by federal legislation signed by President Barack Obama. Its formation gave the United States a national structure for preparing programs, partnerships, and public activities for the 250th anniversary of independence in 2026.
The term semiquincentennial means a 250th anniversary. The commission’s work extends beyond a single ceremony because the anniversary involves federal agencies, states, communities, museums, educators, and private organizations across the country.
America250 is the public-facing banner used by the commission and its nonprofit partners. The commission is not itself the Declaration of Independence or a new governmental institution; it is an organizing body for the national commemoration.
