Coca-Cola introduced the slogan “The Pause That Refreshes” in 1929.
The line presented Coca-Cola as a small, enjoyable break in daily life. That positioning broadened the brand beyond simple thirst-quenching and helped connect the drink with relaxation, social moments, and leisure.
The slogan became one of Coca-Cola’s best-known historical advertising lines. It is separate from “Delicious and Refreshing,” which appeared in the company’s first newspaper advertisement in 1886, and from “The Real Thing,” which Coca-Cola used much later.
The wording also shows how Coca-Cola’s branding evolved from describing the beverage to describing the occasion in which people consumed it. This occasion-based approach became important in later global campaigns.
