The project began after a national Great Wall protection initiative launched in 2006. Field investigations and mapping took place across 15 provincial-level regions, with specialists combining archaeological work, surveying, mapping, and newer technologies to trace surviving walls, trenches, passes, towers, and other structures.
The 2012 assessment put the combined length of wall and trench remains at 21,196.18 kilometers. It also catalogued thousands of associated structures and estimated the Ming Great Wall separately at roughly 8,850 kilometers. That distinction matters: the Great Wall is a network of fortifications built and rebuilt by different states and dynasties, not one continuous construction project.
A frequent mix-up is 2009, when a major survey of the Ming wall produced a separate length estimate. The 2012 announcement was broader, incorporating earlier and later defensive works as well as the Ming system.
