In what year did Cadbury introduce its first Easter egg?

The story behind the answer

Cadbury introduced its first Easter egg in 1875.

The early eggs were made from dark chocolate and decorated with marzipan flowers and plain chocolate piping. They were among the first products to connect chocolate with the Easter season in Britain.

Cadbury later developed a much wider range of Easter products, including hollow eggs, filled eggs and cream eggs. The modern Easter egg tradition also reflects older European customs of using eggs as symbols of spring and renewal.

The date is sometimes confused with the launch of the Cadbury Creme Egg, which came much later. Cadbury’s first Easter egg was a general chocolate product, not the filled Creme Egg sold today.
