In what year did BMW relaunch the Mini brand?

The story behind the answer

BMW relaunched the Mini brand in 2001.

BMW had acquired the Rover Group in 1994, bringing the Mini name under its ownership. Although BMW later broke up most of the Rover Group, it retained the Mini brand and developed a modern successor to the classic car. That new-generation Mini was launched in 2001.

The relaunch marked a shift from the original Mini, which had been produced since 1959, to a larger, more modern hatchback designed for contemporary safety, comfort and performance expectations. Production began at the historic Plant Oxford site in Cowley, formerly associated with Morris Motors and classic Mini manufacturing.

The year can be confused with 2002 or 2003 because sales expanded into additional markets and model developments followed after the initial launch. BMW’s relaunch was also distinct from the final classic Mini production, which ended in 2000. The modern Mini therefore arrived as BMW’s successor brand rather than as a continuation of the old car’s production run.
