In what year did Beyoncé become the first Black woman to headline Coachella?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline Coachella in 2018.

She headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 14 and April 21, 2018, in Indio, California. The performances were widely recognized for their scale, musicianship, choreography, marching-band arrangements, and celebration of historically Black college and university culture.

Her set included a Destiny’s Child reunion with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, marking the trio’s first major performance together since 2015. The festival appearance was later documented in the concert film and live album Homecoming.

The distinction concerns the festival’s headlining position, not the first time a Black woman had performed at Coachella or the first woman to headline the event. Beyoncé’s performances took place after her planned 2017 appearance was postponed because of her pregnancy. She returned the following year as the festival’s top-billed performer.
