The technology debuted on the facelifted fourth-generation Audi A8, unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was billed as the world’s first series-production digitally controlled, full-LED glare-free adaptive high-beam system.
Each headlight used 25 individually controllable light-emitting diodes. Cameras and electronic controls could dim or switch off sections aimed toward oncoming or preceding vehicles while keeping other parts of the road brightly lit. The system could also provide cornering illumination and use navigation data to anticipate bends.
A common mix-up is confusing Matrix LED with Audi’s earlier LED lighting milestones. Audi had already introduced LED daytime-running lights in 2004 and full-LED headlamps on the R8 in 2007. Matrix LED was the later adaptive, segmented high-beam system, not simply Audi’s first use of LEDs.
