Georgia O'Keeffe died in 1986, aged 98.
O'Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887, in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, and became one of the best-known American modernist painters. Her long career included abstract works, enlarged flower paintings, New York skyscrapers, New Mexico landscapes, animal bones, and architectural forms.
She died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on March 6, 1986. Her longevity meant that her life spanned major changes in American art, from early modernism and Alfred Stieglitz's New York gallery to the expansion of her reputation through museums and retrospectives.
Her death date is sometimes confused with the date of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum's opening. The museum opened in Santa Fe in 1997, eleven years after her death, and preserves and interprets her work and legacy.
