In what Wisconsin town was artist Georgia O'Keeffe born in 1887?
Answer
Sun Prairie
Answer
Sun Prairie
Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1887.
She was born on November 15, 1887, on a farm near Sun Prairie, a small community east of Madison. Her parents, Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe, were dairy farmers, and Georgia was the second of seven children.
O'Keeffe later became strongly associated with the landscapes of New Mexico, but her artistic career began in the Midwest and continued through studies in Chicago and New York. Her Wisconsin childhood is therefore an important part of her biography, even though it is less visually connected with the desert imagery for which she became famous.
Sun Prairie is sometimes confused with Madison because it lies in the same region of Wisconsin. Madison was the nearest major city, but Sun Prairie is the specific birthplace given in biographies of O'Keeffe.
