In what month and year did Nvidia first surpass a $3 trillion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

Nvidia first surpassed a $3 trillion market capitalization in June 2024.

Nvidia crossed the threshold on June 5, 2024, as investors continued to value its graphics processors as essential infrastructure for artificial-intelligence computing. Its share price rose sharply during the AI boom, and the company briefly ranked among the world’s most valuable publicly traded businesses.

The company was founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. Nvidia originally became famous for graphics processing units used in video games, but those chips also proved highly effective for parallel computing and machine-learning workloads.

Nvidia’s ten-for-one stock split took effect later in June 2024. A stock split changes the number of shares and the price per share but does not, by itself, change market capitalization. Nvidia’s valuation therefore remained dependent on the combined value of all outstanding shares.
