In what country is the film Coco set?

The story behind the answer

Coco is set in Mexico.

Much of the story takes place in the fictional Mexican town of Santa Cecilia, where Miguel Rivera lives with his extended family. The town’s architecture, markets, plaza, family home, music, clothing, and traditions were designed to evoke real Mexican communities rather than an imaginary generic Latin American setting.

The film then moves between Santa Cecilia and the Land of the Dead. Although the afterlife is fantastical, it remains closely connected to Mexican cultural imagery and to the living family’s home. Miguel crosses between these worlds during the Día de los Muertos celebrations, when deceased relatives are believed to visit their families.

The film’s setting is sometimes confused with the United States because Coco was produced by the American company Pixar and features English-language voice performances. Production nationality and story setting are different: Coco is an American-made film whose central living-world setting is Mexico.
