In what city is the Milan Cathedral located?

The story behind the answer

In what city is the Milan Cathedral located? It is located in Milan, Italy.

Known in Italian as the Duomo di Milano, the cathedral stands at the heart of Milan’s historic centre. It is the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Milan and is dedicated to the Nativity of Saint Mary. Its location gave the building its familiar name: “Milan Cathedral.”

Construction began in 1386 under Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo, and the enormous project continued for nearly six centuries. Its architecture combines Gothic design with later Renaissance and other influences. The cathedral is faced with pale Candoglia marble and is famous for its forest of pinnacles and spires, including the central spire topped by the Madonnina statue.

A common mix-up is confusing Milan Cathedral with St. Peter’s Basilica, which is larger but lies in Vatican City, not Italy proper. Milan’s cathedral is one of the world’s largest churches and a defining landmark of Lombardy’s capital.
