In what city is the headquarters of the World Bank located?

The story behind the answer

The headquarters of the World Bank is in Washington, D.C.

The World Bank’s main headquarters is located at 1818 H Street NW in the US capital. The location reflects the institution’s origins in the post–World War II financial system: the World Bank was created at the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference alongside the International Monetary Fund.

When the World Bank opened for business in 1946, Washington was selected as its permanent home. The decision was not automatic; representatives debated whether the institution should be based in New York or Washington. The US government favored Washington, and the capital ultimately became the center of the Bank’s operations.

The term “World Bank” commonly refers to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association. More broadly, the World Bank Group includes five organizations, including the International Finance Corporation and the International Development Association. It has offices around the world, but those regional and country offices do not replace its Washington headquarters. Geneva, London, and New York City host important international institutions, which can make them tempting alternatives in trivia questions.
