In Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, Moses Rosenthaler creates art in Ennui Prison.
Moses is an incarcerated artist whose work becomes the subject of the film’s story “The Concrete Masterpiece.” He paints a nude portrait of Simone, a prison guard, and the painting attracts the attention of art dealer Julian Cadazio, leading to a highly unusual exhibition.
Ennui Prison is part of the film’s fictional French setting, centered on the city of Ennui-sur-Blasé. The prison should not be confused with the police headquarters featured in the later food story. The segment deliberately combines institutional confinement, avant-garde art, and exaggerated gallery-world satire.
