Runaway scout Sam’s surname in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom is Shakusky.
Sam Shakusky is a Khaki Scout who leaves camp with Suzy Bishop, beginning the central runaway romance of the film. His formal name helps distinguish him from the adult authority figures around him, including Scout Master Randy Ward and Captain Sharp. Jared Gilman plays Sam, while Kara Hayward plays Suzy.
The film is set on the fictional New England island of New Penzance in 1965. Sam’s story combines childhood adventure with themes of isolation, adoption, first love, and the search for a place where he belongs. His scouting skills also make him more capable in the wilderness than the adults initially expect.
Viewers sometimes remember Sam primarily by the nickname “Khaki Scout,” but Shakusky is his family surname. “Bishop” is Suzy’s surname, while Sharp is the surname of Bruce Willis’s police character.
