In Tumblr’s Goncharov meme, the nonexistent film is usually described as set in Naples.
The collaborative fiction places Goncharov in Naples, often against a backdrop of organized crime and tensions linked to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The imagined protagonist, Lo Straniero or Goncharov, is generally portrayed as a Russian hitman and former nightclub manager operating in that setting. Naples gives the invented film a recognizable Italian crime-movie atmosphere.
The city is part of the meme’s shared framework, not a detail from an actual 1973 production. Goncharov’s story changed as Tumblr users added competing plotlines, relationships, and character interpretations, so some details vary between versions. Naples is nevertheless the standard setting repeated in summaries and posters. A common mix-up is Gomorrah: that is a real 2008 film about organized crime in Naples and appears to have influenced parts of the Goncharov joke, but it is not the fictional film’s alternate title.
