In Tomb Raider (2013), Lara Croft’s close friend and ship captain is Conrad Roth.
Roth commands the research vessel Endurance, which carries Lara and her team toward the lost kingdom of Yamatai. He is an experienced sailor and explorer, and his relationship with Lara gives the story an important personal connection. Lara regards him as a mentor and family-like figure.
The Endurance is wrecked near Yamatai after the expedition encounters severe weather. Roth survives the crash, but the isolated island and its hostile inhabitants place the entire group in danger. His injuries and later encounters help show how the expedition forces Lara to become more resilient.
Roth is sometimes confused with other members of Lara’s crew. Jonah Maiava is the expedition’s cook and becomes a major ally across the Survivor trilogy, while Sam Nishimura is Lara’s closest friend and the person connected to Yamatai’s royal history. Alex Weiss is the crew’s technician. Roth’s role is specifically captain and mentor.
