In Tomb Raider (2013), Lara Croft is stranded on the fictional island of Yamatai.
The expedition begins when Lara and her companions search for the lost kingdom of Yamatai, associated with the legendary Sun Queen, Himiko. Their ship is wrecked in the Dragon’s Triangle, and the survivors become trapped on the island. Lara must explore its forests, settlements, caves, and World War II-era remains while trying to rescue her friends.
Yamatai is presented as a dangerous, isolated setting shaped by both archaeological mystery and hostile inhabitants. The game’s narrative is an origin story showing Lara becoming the determined survivor recognized from later adventures. The island should not be confused with Atlantis, the lost civilization central to the original 1996 game.
